The Journey of Shuna
Shuna: Text Translations

I have only the barest reading knowledge of Japanese. Therefore, the majority of my understanding of this beautiful little book depended on online text translations of the story. While I believe there are more in nausicaa.net's archives of the Miyazaki list, there were two translations in particular I found that were a Godsend--without which my attempt to read this book would have been an absolute failure.

  1. Anna Exter's Translation via Hans Raillard's page. This translation is helpful even in format--color coded to each of the changes in text color. However, this works against it as well--when I tried to print out the document, the white text was missing. (At least, when I printed it from Netscape.) I thought this translation was the warmer of the two I read.

  2. Kevin Leahy's Translation. This is the translation link given on nausicaa.net's Shuna page. I found this translation more spare and stilted than Anna Exter's, but it was another angle on the story. I really can't complain, either way, not knowing the actual language.
